Eternity

From the book of The Wyrmslayer, written three years after the Great War ended

And despite all the adventures and battles, all the victories and defeats, he remains what he always was: a Warden. And so he stands, King Eumelos' right hand man, ever watching, always ready to call upon his armies and march again to battle, to right wrongs and to slay monsters. The War-Chant of the Iron Line will be heard once again as he marches for the Teklo, for the Kirlsa, for Djemity.

Warden-Commander Reist Yos Ver recalls the death of Warden Dach Fra Ver, the Triple-Blade

He has many scars now, this Teklo Warden. Many scars, but more honour still. It has been many years since we marched out from the Deep Mountains, here in to the Mosel Desert, but we trusted him then and we trust him still.

Now, now we are all old, and the children of the Iron Line have taken up the burden of sword and shield, spear and armour. They are proud Teklo Wardens, hardened by the Kirlsa Warriors. They understand honour and they understand discipline. They learnt it from him.

He stands now inside a ring of bare steel encircling him and the King. He can feel the Decline coming upon him, the last few years of a Teklo's life when all strength deserts them, and he will not accept this. He has asked his King for one last boon, one last fight.

The battle is as great a clash of wills, of muscles and grunts and dull slaps of flesh on flesh as any of them have ever been. At every Kirlsa Games from the first Dach and Eumelos have fought, and thousands, tens of thousands have come to watch these two battle it out. Age has not dimmed either of these ferocious warriors, at least not yet, and every blow that strikes home sends the other reeling across the sand.

But now, here, the battle is different and the stakes have changed. Now as they circle warily around one another, two knives are thrown into the arena. Now it is time. Dach will not live to see his strength wither, his life-force spent, the memories of his triumphs overborne by the bed-ridden husk he would inevitably become.

It ends. It ends with Dach forcing his blade low into the King's abdomen. Not a fatal wound, but a scarring one. Then Eumelos, brings his knife down hard and fast, shot through the heart. I go to him, tears stinging my eyes, and it is not too late. I do not hear his last words, spoken in secret to his King. It will remain theirs and theirs alone. I weep over the body of this mightiest of Teklo, and over the father of our children.
