“Neeeext!!”.
The queue advanced slowly at the gate of Trask, as Magistrate Ari fra Vein inspected the contents of the chart that tried to get in.
“This is ridiculous! They cannot tax every single product! Can they?” - “Well, this chap here seems that he can”.
Both merchants looked at the man that, accompanied by two soldiers checked the merchandise that was being brought into the city. He had a bandage around his arm, seemingly he had been hurt recently. Three other subordinates were carrying around papers and documents that had to be signed by the merchants after the Magistrate had had a quick look at them.
“With these tolls I'll hardly get any benefit from my merchandise! Do you think that with a… let us call it a 'generous donation' to this officer, maybe he will look kindly upon my certainly humble goods” - “You could try, but I heard that it does not work with this one!”
The queue slowly moved again as a caravan of five donkeys carrying amphorae entered the town in the mountain.
“Neeeeext!!”.
Extract from the Encyclopaedia Teklianna
In the Senate, Ari fra Vein was known for his impetuous efforts aiming at the total prohibition of Bear trade (…). He always collaborated with the Senate Leader in all aspects during the economic crisis (vid. Great Economic Crisis), even if he favoured more direct intervention and directed economy. Of course this did not stop him to do so in his own Tetrapolis and the Colonies, a clear precedent for the toll and economic union that would eventually lead to the State of the United Races comprising the Tetrapolis and many of the inter-Peoples Colonies of Balas.
As recorded in a statue base located at Rebirth, showing Ari holding a hedgehog in his arm while poiting with his hand to the front, stepping on a dead bear
“Dedicated to High Chancellor of the State Ari fra Vein, founder of the government and its institutions. All the races praise his efforts and honour his memory”
From Not In Vein! an unoffcial biography of the life and times of High Chancellor Ari Fra Vein by Scholar Weylan Fra Qi
Having achieved so much, the High Chancellor, already entering his Decline [Editor's Note: The final few years of Teklo life, when strength and vigour fades from the body] retired to his estates to manage the affairs of the Tetrapolis away from the busy hubub of the city-streets that he loved so well.
And so he would have stayed, until his quiet and much mourned death, save for one fact. Ari Fra Vein was ever a courageous man in the face of potential Hedgehog cruelty. And so it was that upon hearing of a Hedgehog/Bear-Baiting Ring within Trask itself, that Ari donned once more his old Magistrates' Robes and, weak as he was, lead the raid upon the establishment himself.
Within the High Chancellor found a scene so horrifying that he personally threw himself into a fighting pit in which seven bears were attempting to kill a Giant Battle-Hedgehog and tragically lost his life to the ursine threat. It took a whole day for a Kirlsa Beastmaster to be brought in to coax the Giant Battle-Hedgehog from protecting his body.
The High-Chancellor was buried in state with all the honours that could be accorded one such as he, and all across the Tetrapolis and the State of the United Peoples, there was mourning.
