“Are you absolutely certain we're going the right way, Relock?”
“Of course I am, we've been sailing in a straight line for weeks!”
“It's just that I'm not sure the sun's supposed to do that–“
“Are you questioning your Navigator, Elit?”
”… yes?”
“Hmph.”
“Don't question the Navigator, Elit. He gets grouchy.”
“Oh, you're back, are you, Tarik? Have you been having fun doing your spirit…y things?”
“Oh yes.”

Correspondence from the insurers Quaric'Tomaus'Fra, Es'Mas and Di'Fra, dated over 900 years after the defeat of the Numina

Dear Somenic'Kalthis'Es'Di'Mas

After reviewing your claim, and interviewing members of the erstwhile crew of the Intec, we regret to inform you that we will only be able to pay forty-three percent of amount of the value of the vessel. As you know, your policy covers loss of vessels and legitimate cargo due to adverse weather, piracy, wyrms, other sea monsters and finally, Acts of Sylphim. In this case we are obliged to reduce the amount paid on grounds of questions regarding the legality of some of your goods, and what we adjudge to be a high chance of negligence on the part of your proxies (to whit, the crew of the Intect). As you cannot fail to be aware, trade in Ehrli Lava Brandy was recently made illegal in both the Starfall archipelago and the Home Fleet, due to its capacity to induce intoxication via skin-contact, and on occasion, breathing in its presence. However, your quartermaster has produced records and correspondence indicating that you made instruction to obtain five barrels of said liquor from “contacts” on Starfall. It is our judgement that the presence of this beverage may have lead to your crew becoming intoxicated, and that this intoxication played a significant part in the loss of the vessel. We make this judgement for the following reasons.

  • Witnesses from Starfall have stated that several of your deckhands expressed an interest in, and I do here quote “cracking one of those bad boys open and having a snifter”.
  • No adverse weather conditions were reported or divined in the area of ocean surrounding the island where the Barian picked up your crew, having been lead there by their navigator, for a month on either side of the wreck.
  • The first mate of the Barian has reported that many of the Intec's crew were in “some considerable state” of inebriation when they were rescued, despite it being a week since the boat was reported lost.
  • Finally, but perhaps most importantly, the entire of the crew persist in stating that, after the Intec was smashed apart by a “flashing purple sea monster with a mean streak” they were rescued by Captains Elit'Dolum'Mas and Jinbe'Polaria'Fra. Not only have these legendary figures been reported lost at sea for hundreds of years, but your crew have also repeatedly stated that when they rescued them from the wreck of the Intec, said captains were sailing on the back of a giant, blue swimming cat, that both “purred adorably” and “incinerated the sea monster with lasers from its eyes”.

When questioned as to why these were individuals were present at this time, the Intec's navigator referred us to a conversation he had with one Relock'Dolum'Fra (a description of whom can also be found in many historical texts regarding the Numina war). Apparently, Relock asked your navigator what year it was, and when your man replied, admitted that the crew of the aforementioned Cat-like boat might be “a little lost”.

Your sailors do you credit by, to a man, holding to the story that they were dropped off on the island by their rescuers, who then “flew off into the sunset”. However, based on the accumulated evidence, we do not consider that you have much grounds for an appeal against our decisions in this matter.

We hope you will continue to choose our firm for your insurance needs.

Kind Regards

Quaric'Tomaus'Es'Mas
