Caste: Warrior
“Eumelos bears an ancestral burden perhaps dating from before the End of History, and seeks to defeat and bind the great Spirit Lokastila, Lightning's Bane. Frequently hampered by sprites, his curse, and his loud-mouthed enthusiasm, he is nonetheless the most successful Spirit-hunter of his family's line, having met the spirit once and escaped with his life. He will need allies, he will need weapons, and he will fail.”
In the years after the great war there were many who questioned whether Great Warrior Eumelos would make the transition to Great King Eumelos smoothly. Many of these were answered by a swift honour duel that left them unable to doubt. The remainder eventually realised that this new style of active Kingship was working quite well after all (at least with the King's council to moderate him).
Divine King Eumelos' first major move was to quadruple the Kirlsa Guardian detachment on Broken Peak. While it is unclear if the Sylphim were in fact “planning something”, they were certainly unable to get very far with the finest Kirlsa warriors watching over them. Regardless it turned into some sort of art project.
His next move however was the simple combination of a Ferali gem with some water he beat out of the Spirit Milegarn. This was safely encased in a large glass tank and occasionally fed the bodies of those dishonoured caught on Kirlsa lands. It remained there for several years until the cage was smashed in the epic duel between Sirana and Eumelos' apprentices. In the ensuing confusion it escaped, and has yet to be recaptured to this day, tales of its hunting across Djemity abound, and it is now said to have grown to the size of a brahda beetle.
”…Yet in those years, my king did not sit idly on his throne and furrow his brow beneath the Crown of Lightning. He was greatly troubled by the relics of the last war - fiendish devices like the so-called 'Novacannon' and Broken Peak, which could do the work - and snuff the lives - of a thousand warriors in the blink of an eye. At the ongoing Citadel meetings, he clamoured for greater Citadel control and regulation of all such weapons, and took personal interest in maintaining the strength of the garrison of Broken Peak…
…While the Teklo consulted their documents and tables, and the Aquienos scrambled to reestablish supply lines and trade routes, my lord recognised the true strength of the Kirlsa in peactime: manpower. He organised the tribes for the creation of great public works, new fortifications, roads between the oases and as far into the lands of others as they were permitted, by framing the construction projects as competitions worthy of warriors and strategists…
…The king showed considerable enthusiasm for the growth of our fledgling navy. Following discussions with the Aquienos, he led the first great sea-beast hunt to find, capture and domesticate (or at least, condition) the sharks, turtles, and sea serpents which now bear the castles of the New Mosel Navy…
…His vision for a stable - but not boring, as he would constantly remind me - Djemity was brought closer to fruition with the replacement of the REARS with RANGERS: the Really Awesome New Group for Ensuring Relative Stability. He sought to direct the wanderlust and desire for challenge of our people to deeds of heroism and goodwill the world over. Parties of adventurous youths were encouraged to strike out beyond the confines of the desert, aid the needy of all races, and even accept non-Kirlsa into their numbers to forge bonds of trust and respect between all. Across the world, the weak and the weary were to look upon Kirlsa outlanders with gratitude…
…After numerous incidents caused by the over-enthusiastic uptake, my king in his wisdom ruled that all parties should be accompanied by an elder and mentor…
…In his wisdom the king took it upon himself to bestow honourary Kirlsahood on any great warrior of the other races whose deeds impressed him. Regularly consulting the list of the world's great warriors maintained by Dach, the king would often send for, or travel to meet, warriors of talent and promise…
…Around the same time, the much-heralded Apprentice Duel between the king and his advisor Sirana the Roc - promised in a distant fit of rage, but pursued out of renewed respect - drew great crowds, the impressive display heartening our people as a sure sign that the age of heroes was by no means over. Both apprentices are now highly respected in the royal court, the king's own protege leading an exemplary RANGERS troop and inspiring many…
…The king took every opportunity to personally train his offspring, and remained proud of all equally. Yet at times he seemed so distant, even to his family. While the years of kingship tempered the zeal of the man I knew in his adventuring days, this was different: not even council meetings caused in him such melancholy as the clear nights when he would shut himself alone in his chambers. Sometimes servants reported that as he retired, he would reach for the small, plain book he would keep by his bedside; but none were to disturb him, and none knew for sure. The only mention ever made by the king himself was to crush vicious rumours that it simply took the king all these years to finish a single story-book…”
